Jonathan Smith

 Jonathan graduated from the University of Tasmania at the end of 1979 with a Batchelor of Law degree. He moved from Hobart to Burnie, where he was employed as an Apprentice at Law working predominantly in Litigation, but also gaining experience in Family and other commercial aspects.

In 1992 Jonathan moved to Smithton and acquired the law firm “FC Hudson”. This was a long standing law firm, which had been operating in Smithton for a number of decades.

Jonathan worked as a sole practitioner in this practice dealing with many general aspects of the law but predominately working in Commercial, Conveyancing, Wills, Probates, Family and Minor Civil Litigation.

During this early period Jonathan gained significant specialised experience in working in the Abalone and Rock Lobster fishing sector, acting for major clients with significant interests. This period was particularly vibrant given the massive legislative changes that occurred through the 1980’s and 1990’s. Jonathan represented major clients in a series of significant Court cases in these sectors which helped define future legislative changes and other commercial practices.

Jonathan gained extensive expertise in the transactional side of Farming and Forestry. A significant part of Jonathan’s work has been and remains acting for beef and dairy farmers, both within, and outside of the Circular Head area. The practice extends to all aspects of farming business including share farming arrangements, farm and stock leases, securities within that sector and equity partnership arrangements.

Jonathan’s practice, and in particular in the dairy farming area, has been molded and evolved through various influxes of dairy farmers, predominantly from New Zealand, but also other international and interstate farmers moving into the North West coast of Tasmania. Significant practice changes have evolved as these new entrants bring with them their commercial practices and experiences.

A significant part of Jonathan’s practice involves Business and Farm Succession and Estate Planning. Jonathan obtains a lot of personal satisfaction out of assisting families work through the complex and challenging areas involving the succession of businesses and farms through the generations. Jonathan has acted for a number of generations of the one family in a variety of roles in his practice.

Jonathan has built a large clientele within Circular Head and on the North West Coast and practices extensively in the creation of Wills and the firm conducts a large Probate practice.

As a long standing member of the Taxation Institute of Australia, Jonathan regularly attends conferences and seminars for professional development. Jonathan is also a member of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Tasmania and regularly attends conferences and associated professional development. Jonathan is able to bring to his clients the benefits of his years of experience in his continued professional development in these and other areas.

When not actively involved in his practice Jonathan enjoys spending time at his shack, swimming, playing tennis, enjoying AFL both locally and nationally, riding motorcycle and spending time with his family.

Jonathan is the current Chairman of Emmerton Park Incorporated, the aged care provider in Circular Head. Jonathan has been Chairman for a number years and is a life member of that Association. The provision of high quality aged care services both within the residential facility and independent living units has long been a passion of Jonathan’s and he enjoys supporting and encouraging fellow Board Members to achieve their best in these pursuits.
